Cataract surgery is quite safe. However, like any other procedure, it's not 100% risk-free. Patients with pre-existing diseases such diabetes, high blood pressure and other eye diseases such as significant astigmatism would have a higher risk of developing complications. Possible complications include infection, inflammation of blood vessels, post-operative glaucoma, retinal detachment, malposition or dislocation of the implanted lens and posterior capsule opacifications, all of which can lead to vision impairment.

- Allergy to the medications used for pain relief
Some people may be allergic or develop side effects from these medications such as nausea and vomiting, difficulty in breathing, rashes, swelling of the face and lips and possibly fits. - Surgical complications
here is always a possibility of infection with any operation. If a severe infection develops, the eye may become blind. Other problems that may occur and cause poor vision are, bleeding and damage to the cornea or retina. These may require further operations.

Causes of Cataract
Cataract Symptoms, Causes, Remedy and DietDeterioration in the nutrition of the lens
There are three factors which contribute to the loss of transparency of the lens. These are deterioration in the nutrition of the lens which diminishes the vitality and resistance of the delicate lens fibres; deposits of acids and salts between the lens fibres which have an irritating effect on the lens tissues and exert an increasing pressure on its delicate fibres, gradually destroying them; and disintegration of lens fibres which cloud the entire lens in the absence of appropriate measures.
Poisons in the blood stream, faulty style of living
As in the case of most diseases, poisons in the blood stream due to dietetic errors and a faulty style of living, are the real cause of cataract. The toxic matter in the blood stream spreads throughout the body to find shelter in any available weak spot. It strikes the lens if it has become weak through strain, excessive use of the eyes, and local irritation. The condition becomes worse with the passage of time and then a cataract starts developing.
Stress and strain, alcoholic drinks, certain physical ailments
Other causes of cataract are stress and strain; excessive intake of alcoholic drinks, sugar, and salt; smoking; certain physical ailments such as gastro-intestinal or gall-bladder disturbances; diabetes; vitamin deficiencies; fatty acid intolerance; ageing; radiation; side-effects of drugs that have been prescribed for other diseases.
its better to have a good eyesight and not having spectacles..for me its troublesome wearing contact lens or spectacles as it always must be clean and if your grade of the eyes increase you need to change the degree of the spectacles or contact lens.this are some ways to improve your vision...
1) When you are reading, adjust the book so that the book is 30 cm away from your eyes.
2)take a break by looking far away for about 5 mins after ding near work for 30 mins.
3)eat vegetables and fruit which contain vitamins that help to improve eyesight like...
-bluberries
-spinach
-food that is high in vitamin c
-sweet potatoes (for night vision)
-billberry
-mahonia grape extract
4)when using computer, the monitor must be at least one arms length away from your eyes and be just below your eye level.(this goes also when watching television)
5)there must be enough light in the room while doing near work.
6)go outdoors and play!!!
if you dont want to have a spectacles and be blind, follow this..
its better to lose everything except your sight, the world means nothing if you cant see the beauty of the world.
please comment...=)

wow! I know you hae done a lot of research to be able to write out this comment.
Can you elaborate more about your own opinions? I do not mean the facts.
-Do you think it is a waste of money going to these kind of surgeries?
-Why do you think, even though the surgeries are not risk free, people still go to the surgeries?
- Do you encourage people to go to surgeries?

Dear Rizel,
your article is very detailed but please do not regurgitate. Like what Amanda says, elaborate on your opinions instead of the facts. It is good that you provided with some ways to protect our vision. Vision is very important. There is a chinese saying meaning that having lots of knowledge about something is nothing compared to a glimpse of it. You can relate it to Singapore students. Many are myopic because they spend long hours in front of television, computer or near work. Every year, the Health Promotion Board will go to schools to conduct check-ups on eyecare. The Health Promotion Board also organised many activities that promotes the eye-care. Our school has an eye-break bell every half an hour to remind pupils to take an eye-break after half-an hour of near work. Do you think this is good? Why or why not?
