3rd week of news

Schools are making preparations for students to attend lessons from home if the influenza A (H1N1) outbreak worsens. The Ministry of Education says that there is no need to extend the holidays or keep school closed. But teachers have begun gearing up for the possibility that they might have to conduct lessons and collect assignments over the internet.Ten primary and secondary schools and junior colleges told The Straits Times that they were putting their e-learning systems in place.A junior college teacher said she had been tasked with uploading more than a month's worth of e-learning materials before school reopens on June 29.More Singaporeans, including schoolchildren, are expected to return from overseas over the coming days as the mid-year holidays draw to a close. The Education Ministry said that schools would be ready to carry out home-based learning if they had to.Schools have a variety of ways for children to learn via internet, such as online weekly lesson plans, e portals to track learning and allow students to submit assignments , as well as other learning materials. An Education Ministry spokesman said that the ministry was monitoring the H1N1 situation in schools and the general community carefully.

my opinion:
Its good that the schools are preparing for some e-learning and lessons through internet if the H1N1 outbreak worsens. Its because we students especially the primary sixes all over Singapore must revise and do some extra lessons in either school or via internet for the upcoming PSLE.Even if the the lessons are suspended we must take our own initiative and self-control to revise on our own for the exams. We must be careful and aware of our own health. Some schools are having extra supplementary and so if we have fever we better not go to school and try to recover and eat healthily.I hope that the schools wont need to closed down for 1-2 weeks as we might waste the time use for learning.

2nd week of news

The Strait Times peeked into 80 recycling bins in public areas and found that all of them contained some rubbish that could not be recycled. The 'foreign items' included decomposed chicken briyani, soggy tissue paper, prawn shells and chicken bones. There was even a used condom in a bin in Jalan Teck Whye. Many bins were also used as ashtrays, while others were foul smelling and attracted pests like fruit flies and ants. While the average amount of recyclables collected from each bin in HDB estates has gone up-from 65kg per month in 2007 to 103kg per month last year- the National Environment Agency said that about one fifth of all waste deposited in recycling bins could not be recycled. Two workers from public waste collector Colex Holdings was having a hard time sorting out the rubbish to their correct bins.An NEA spokesman said that throwing waste such as leftover food and drinks into the bins contaminates the recyclable materials and renders them non-recyclable.Different companies are preventing the bins from overflowing and attracting pests,so, they wash and clean the bins once a week at HDB estates but twice a week at Orchard Road and MRT.

my opinion:

I think as a resident of Singapore we must be considerate to the other people living around us because the rubbish like leftover foods will give foul-smell as they rot.It can contained some virus in the air and people living around that area may get sick. Also, the rubbish collector will have a hard time like sorting rubbish in their right compartments. It will take a longer time for the recyclable items to be recycled as this happens. We must be aware on where we throw our rubbish and try not to waste things like paper which u can use both sides of the paper instead of just one side.We must try not to throw leftover foods as it attracts the pests and flies which carried several diseases and virus.A clean surroundings will help us live a healthy life.So we must contribute to have a clean and green surroundings and the target a low amount of garbage for this year!

First week of news

1)

An 11-month-old baby, Adrian, drowned while his mum slept after clubbing. He was found half-submerged, pale and motionless by his father, Mr Ong. He came back looking out for job while Adrian’s maternal grandmother was also out, picking a gift for her grandson’s first birthday. Ms Tan Siew Kim, 20, and Mr Ong rushed the toddler to Raffles Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about one and a half hours later. Ms Tan came home at 5am or 6am on May 7 after a night out with her friends at a club, said Mr Ong. Before he left at about 10 am that day, he placed the baby beside Ms Tan, tapped her and reminded her to feed Adrian. When he got home at about 5pm, he could not find Adrian and soon called out for him, he became hysterical when he found him in the p ail of water pale and motionless. Just a month before, he said, his son had crawled to the toilet and stood up, holding on to the pail for support.

My opinions:

This is a very sad article as losing a loved one is the hardest thing to experience. In this article, there was no one to be blame as no one was supervising Adrian. However, children like Adrian are supposed to be supervised as such incident like this may happen. Being a mother at the age of 20 is a great responsibility. Having to watch them 24 hours a day even you are ill. Therefore, in this case, Ms Tan is not responsible enough to take care of her son and she expects her mother and husband to look after him while she club whole day and night. Mr Ong and the grandmother should have planned a schedule on who is going to supervise Adrian. It is more organized this way as it is ensured that Adrian has a supervisor while he play but also the supervisor should ensure that nothing bad will happen to the child. After this incident, we know that even the home posed a danger to young children who were left unattended and unsupervised. “Any water in the toilet can be a potential hazard and in this case, it proved fatal, claiming a life of a child who was just learning to stand up and walk on his own and about to turn one year old,” the coroner said. I agree on what the coroner said there is many ways how a child can die without any supervision of an adult.

2)

A 15-year-old Singaporean student studying in India has become the island’s 8 case of influenza a (H1N1). He is also the first to be picked up by thermal scanners installed at change airport. The boy had been in Orlando and Atlanta in the United States on a school trip from may 17 to last Sunday. The airport scanners detected his fever when he arrived at Singapore on Monday from Atlanta via Mumbai. He had been feverish during the flight and was seated at 39K on Singapore Airlines flight SQ421 and he was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) and warded to KK Women’s and Children Hospital. He was taken there early yesterday morning. Laboratory results at 2.40pm on the same day confirmed he was infected By H1N1.

My opinions:

The case of H1N1 flu in Singapore is getting higher. After a 15-year-old student, become the eight case of H1N1. I think the Ministry Of Health will be taking some precaution in the airports and places the infected person contacted. It is important to take this precaution seriously, as it can save your life. In school, we are required to bring a personal thermometer to check on our temperature. It can be sometimes irritating as lessons are interrupted but we know that it is for our own good. It is good that the MOH acted quickly after the scanners detected the boy’s fever in the airport in Singapore. Putting him in the isolation war, away from the public is a good idea as the virus can spread very quickly.
